Introduction

Our software tester apprenticeship is a structured program that provides aspiring testers with hands-on training and real-world experience to prepare them for a successful career in software development.

Adverse effects resulting from faulty software have consequences that impact all our lives in some way. This was only exacerbated through the pandemic when many UK companies were forced to rapidly accelerate their digital technology programmes. This change of pace came at the expense of robust testing, leading to undetected software defects and ultimately system failures affecting millions of customers.

The need for adept and professional software test engineers has never been greater, which is why we developed our software tester apprenticeship program. Gaining both the internationally recognised ST0129 V1.1 Level 4 apprenticeship and theory from the ISTQB CTFL V4.0 qualifications, our apprentices are equipped with the knowledge and skills to analyse, design, and execute tests for the detection of software defects.

Our unique approach equips with soft skills and mind-set awareness training, reinforced through activities and team exercises to produce well-rounded, multi-skilled, work-ready accredited software test engineers.

Modules

Module 1: Testing Fundamentals

From software landscape to principles of testing, apprentices perform their first software tests, build their first interactive web-page and learn essential groundwork theory.

Module 2: Testing Lifecycle

In addition to basic coding & test framework automation skills, apprentices learn how testers interact with developers and others across both waterfall & agile lifecycles.

Module 3: Holistic Techniques

Backed by innovative software-based exercises, apprentices learn a number of test case design techniques and core theory; all reinforced with coding skills in a second language.

Module 4: Test Management

Forms the basis of understanding a test managers activities, such as creating test progress reports, selecting test strategies for the plan and how to mitigate against product & project risk.

Module 5: Simulated Project

Substantive team project to test a proprietary software system, requiring them to self-organize design & execute test cases to present as a showcase of their work.

Monthly on-the-job training & mentoring

In partnership with employers, we conduct regular one-to-one progress reviews with apprentices to monitor & validate continued learning of required skills & knowledge needed for their role.

Concluding with the end-point assessment gateway

When working at required standard and backed by their own comprehensive portfolio, the apprentice undertakes grading by way of scenario-based testing and professional discussion.

Delivery Model

Our programme can be delivered via a ‘hot start’ model whereby individuals join an immersive full time 10 week training programme, followed by continuous ‘on the job‘ and weekly or monthly day/half day modules for circa 15-18 months.

Alternatively, to suit employers who require their employees in their roles at the start of their employment, or to suit employees up-skilling whilst doing their existing roles, learners can follow a more traditional model of block release.
